Biografía
Alexander Slidell Mackenzie nació Nueva York, 6 de abril de 1803 y falleció en 13 de septiembre de 1848.
Viajero e hispanista estadounidense. Viajó por España en dos ocasiones, la primera en 1827.

En el capítulo XVII del volumen II describe su paso por las cercanías de la ciudad lo que le permite hacer unos comentarios sobre su situación: This is the Guadalete, upon which stands the famous old city of Xerez.
O bien de la batalla del 711: Near Xerez was fought, eleven centuries since, that celebrated battle.
Igualmente destaca: Xerez is also celebrated in Spain for its fine horses, and all the world over for the excellence of its wine. Y más adelante escribe: …the first qualities are much finer and more expensive than the best wines of Madeira.
